Dresses

2026

Susan began making her series of Dress Sculptures in 1999. These works cross the boundaries between art, fashion & craft, questioning our need to separate and categorise. Utilising upcycled maps, paper currency, coffee filters, plastic & textiles, their beauty and finely crafted detail draw the viewer in, then reveal the deeper, layered conceptual questioning and meanings in the works.

It was Susan’s interest in the politics of feminism and the body that led to this series of dresses, including Colonial Dress, 2010, which is currently on show in the exhibition, Postcolonial? at the House of European History in Brussels (until 1st February 2027) and is in their collection; Territory Dress, 2018, commissioned by and on permanent display in Our Colonial Inheritance at the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam; Highland Dress 2020 showing in Collateral Drawing 6 at APT Gallery, London, October 2026 and Money Dress shown in the exhibition, Money Talks at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford 2024 and now in in the P.O.C. Collection, Brussels, BE..
