Europa, Archives Nationales, Paris France
2024
Europa is a life-size sculpture made from maps & cloth. Exhibited Cassini's Map of France. An encyclopedia of the territory at the Hôtel de Soubise/ Archives Nationales, Paris, FR, 14th October 2026-1st February 2027.
Europa reflects Susan's time spent in France and questions recent historic events in Europe, including the war in Ukraine, Brexit, and mass migration. Europa is a time traveller looking out to what? Standing in seawater and carrying a rucksack, she bears the weight of an unpredictable future. Meticulously crafted and subtly revealing, she is both beautiful and full of foreboding.
Susan’s interest in the politics of feminism and the body has led to a series of Sculptural Garments including Territory Dress, 2018, commissioned by and on permanent display in Our Colonial Inheritance at the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam; Colonial Dress, which is in the collection of the House of European History in Brussels; and Money Dress in the P.O.C. Collection, Brussels, BE.
Europa was shown in the Hotel d'Astier's Medieval Gallery, in the exhibition Out of Time as part of Forcalquier Atelier Ouverts Arts Festival France, July/Aug 2023. For this exhibition, Susan also created the installation, Hot Air, that hung in the art centre's Renaissance courtyard.
