Project Information

IDENTITY Mapping Project

The aims of the project were to look at concepts of maps, mapping and journeys in a broad sense and especially where they relate to the students lives, experience and identity and to make drawings and sculptures from this endeavour. The process began by making drawings of journeys and then went on to explore ideas of mapping the body, by making drawings from and of the body containing elements that were personal and relevant to each individual and their identity/perception of themselves. The drawings were developed into sculptures. The sculptures were simple wire and chicken wire structures. The students worked individually and collaboratively. We also made a collaborative world map.

Journey Drawings
The project began with all students doing their own journey drawings. We looked at and discussed maps, journeys and travel and how this is a part of our lives and identity. The drawings were of real, everyday and familiar journeys and of imaginary journeys, such as a trip to the moon.

Mapping the body
In the playground the students drew around each other with chalk. Then they did similar drawings on large sheets of paper and add images, symbols, shapes, colours and patterns that express elements/interests that were personal to them.

Sculptures
The next stage was to make sculptures with wire and chicken wire. The structures were based on the body mapping drawings. Some were life-size and some concentrate on a part of the body, a portrait heads for example. Students worked in pairs on their sculptures.
